Reviving historical practices and implementing current environmental research, Botanica Tinctoria offers a range of innovative and beautiful materials for the creative designer or maker. The harmonious palette of 14 naturally dyed colours is sourced from traditional dye plants such as indigo and madder.
Dyeing is carried out in a closed-loop system. The range includes ribbons, eyelet lace, rick rack, hand-crocheted lace edgings, embroidery thread and voile fabrics, all made from organic cotton or organic silk. At the end of their useful life, all our materials can be returned to the earth through composting.
As part of our continuing collaboration with Folkwear Sewing Patterns, we're making up a number of their designs in Botanica TInctoria materials. Currently, we're working out details for the English Smock - see the pattern here - and we're testing out different smocking designs. Smocking involves a lot of preparation, but results in a beautiful, elastic fabric. We've been working with our organic cotton voile in Terra Cotta and Eri silk embroidery threads, and you can see our first test piece below.
